Google and Amazon Need to Get it Together

Image
Let's start this out with a disclaimer; this is an opinion/rant. Do with it what you will. We all know there is some stiff competition between the two Titans; Google and Amazon. But can they please get over their back-and-forth bickering already? It is costing their users like you and me a lot of missed entertainment! About the time Amazon started selling their FireTV devices, they decided stop selling Google products that it saw as direct competition. At the time, this included Google's Android TV devices and has grown to include their Google Home Smart Assistants. Amazon has even gone so far to not just exclude these devices from its search results, but actually display THEIR devices instead! Note the search results for "google home": In an act of apparent retaliation, Google has pulled its YouTube service from availability on Amazon devices. Quid Pro Quo, eh Google? This has gone back and forth several times, with occasional arrangements bringing t

Tomb Raider Revamp

Image
Let me start out by saying that I am more excited for this Tomb Raider than, well, any OTHER Tomb Raider, ever. In recent years, +Naughty Dog  released a simply BRILLIANT title, Uncharted, that completely blew me away. When I played Uncharted the first time, I was all like "YES! This is what Tomb Raider SHOULD have been!" Well, this revamp of Tomb Raider looks like what Naughty Dog would have made if they made a Tomb Raider title.  This is not in ANY WAY a demeaning comment to +Square Enix  /  +Crystal Dynamics . I mean, those guys have a track record in a whole class of their own. But I consider it a compliment to them to compare what they have pulled off here with my impression of the Uncharted series. That being said, you should all check out the trailers and gameplay footage floating around. Personally like this new +GameStop  pre-order trailer. A THOUSAND COOL POINTS to the first one to comment the classic origin of the song used in this trailer!

Ubuntu Touch - Ubuntu for Tablets

Image
Ok, let me start out by saying I am possibly more excited about this than any other mobile-related news to com out lately. Just watching this video full of impressive-looking features and design is enough to make me re-think using my Nexus 7 to replace the head unit in my car. Now I'm thinking of keeping it as a usable, portable tablet for a bit more. Go ahead and watch the video below. The Developer Preview should be available tomorrow so I'll get it installed on my Nexus 7 and report back with my experience.

Oh Comcast....Why Do I Stick Around?

Image
So let me start out by saying I am usually fairly content with my Comcast connection. I pay for the "Performance" package that states: "Get download speeds up to 20 Mbps and upload speeds up to 4 Mbps with PowerBoost®." My download speeds, according to Speedtest.net, are regularly in the 13Mbit - 18Mbit range, which I find quite acceptable. I can stream HD content from the web with easy, and I rarely have a hiccup with gaming online. BUT... In the last week or so, my Upload speeds have been dismal. I struggle to get 600kb  according to Speedtest, and real-world tests are even worse! Trying to transfer a file from my home PC to my work PC via my home web server, I barely get 250kb!  That is ridiculous! A few months back I had an issue that affected both my Download AND Upload speeds. A technician came out several days after I contacted support and said there was a signal issue and he would have to come back the next day and repair some wiring on the outside

Android App Recommendation: FXGuru

Image
Every once in a while, an app comes along that surprises the hell outta me. FXGuru is one of those apps! It lets you add impressive-quality special effects to your boring home videos. The app is free, and as of now, there are 4 effects that are offered free as well. Other effects can be purchased individually through in-app Play Store links. There is also a "MegaPack" that offers 13 effects for $8.99. For now, I'm having a blast with the freebies, but see the developers Play Store Trailer below for a rundown of some of the other effects. Thanks to Droid-Life for pointing out this great app!
